Sonepur ((オリヤー語:ସୋନପୁର୍); (ヒンディー語:सोनपुर)), also known as Sonpur State, was one of the princely states of India during the period of the British Raj. Its ruler was entitled to a nine gun salute.〔(Sonepur Princely State (9 gun salute) )〕 Formerly it was placed under the Central India Agency, but in 1905 it was transferred to the Eastern States Agency.〔 Malleson, G. The former state's territory is in the present-day Subarnapur district, Odisha. ==History== Sonepur state was founded in 1556. It was ruled by Rajputs belonging to the Chauhan dynasty. The state became a British protectorate on 13 Dec 1826. The ruling family was awarded with the title ''Raja Bahadur'' for services rendered to the British during the Sambalpur uprising.〔 Great Britain India Office. ''The Imperial Gazetteer of India''.
